Malaria in Vietnam

Going with family 10 & 12 yr olds to Vietnam - advised to have Hep A, Typhoid and DipTetPolio.
Going to Hanoi, on boat on Halong Bay 2 nights and train to Sapa 4 nights (in total) then to Hoi An.(2 1/2 weeks total).
Having problems downloading map to see if Sapa or any of these areas are Malaria also if best to take Malarone?

I agree that vaccinations against hepatitis A and a booster diphteria/tetanus is nedeed for the adults, but not the two children. They are protected by their childhood vaccinations. The risk of typhoid is very low, and we do not recoomend it for travels of less than 4 weeks.

I looked up Sapa and Hoi An on Google maps, and as far as I can see they are not malaria risk areas.

If you follow this link:

http://www.traveldoctor.eu/trip/result.1.154.1.html

you find our map of malaria risk areas in Vietnam at the bottom of the page. The map can be zoomed in and out and moved around so you can find precisely the places you are visiting.

Malaria in Vietnam

I am travelling to Vietnam in November for two weeks going visiting Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An, Whale Island and Saigon and the Mekong Delta. Can you advise which vaccinations I need & what you recommend for Malaria as I am reading contradicting info on the web. thanks,

Yes, if you ask different persons you will get different answers. If the follow the link below

http://www.traveldoctor.info/trip/result.1.154.1.html

you will find a map at the bottom of the page over the areas of Vietnam, where we recommend malaria prophylaxis. It is very limited, only the central highlands towards the border to Laos.
The map can be moved and zoomed in and out.

Vietnam for four weeks

We are 50, 52, 20 and 19 years old and going to Vietnam for 30 day's, we will be travelling from the South right up to the north , hiking and looking at places of the beaten track. We are all healthy and fit. What sort of immunisation do you recoment if any. Is it really necessary to have any immunisation ?

Yes, it is necessary to be protected against hepatitis A (you need a vaccination) and we usually recommend immunization against diphteria and tetanus if your last vaccination is more than 10 years back.
Concerning malaria, the risk is very limited in Vietnam. If you follow this link:

http://www.traveldoctor.eu/trip/result.1.154.1.html

you find a map of malaria in vietnam at the bottom of the page, showing the few areas where we reommend tablet for malaria. The maps can be moved and zoomed in and out.

Malaria in Vietnam

We are going on a cruise which includes stops in Hanoi and Hue. Will we need to get immunised against Malaria.

No, the risk of maalria in costal areas of Vietnam is very small. If you follow this link, you will find a map over malaria in Vietnam:

Vietnam for 3 weeks

We will be travelling to Vietnam for 3 weeks going to Ho Chi Minh, Hue, Hanoi, Halong and 2 days in Sapa/Lao Cai - what do you suggest for immunisation and is malaria a problem in Sapa/Lao Cai?

We recommend vaccination against hepatitis A. concerning malaria, if you search www.traveldoctor.info under Vietnam you will find a map at the bottom of the page showing the areas in Vietnam (and Thailand, Cambodia and Laos) where we recommend prophylaxis. I have been unable to locate precisely the locations and they fit to more than one place apparently.

Malaria in Vietnam

I am going to Vietnam for 2 weeks Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi Ann, HCM and 1 day Mekong Delta trip. I have heard of bad side effects with anti malaria tablets - do I need to take them for this trip or can I do without?

We only recommend malaria tablets to the central highlands bordering Laos. The risk is low in the rest of the country. As you decribe your trip this area is not included.

Malaria in Vietnam

I will be travelling to Vietnam for 15 days in Jan.2005 Hanoi to Saigon including Miecong Delta for 3 days. I plan to take Doxycyclene for time in Delta only.
Is this sufficient? I have had HepA Tetanus and Typhoid vaccines.
Do you recommend anything else?

It is sufficient. The highest risk of malaria in Vietnam is actually in the central highlands towards the border with Laos, not in the delta.
Doxycycline is quite adequate and so woyld Lariam or Malarone be.
We do not recommend anything else for a two weeks visit.

Vietnam for 3 weeks

I will be travelling to Vietnam for 3 weeks, leaving Australia early December. What vaccinations would recommend?
We will be travelling to the Mekong delta, Central Highlands and Hanoi, Sapa and Halong Bay, we will need malaria medication? If so which one do you recommend?

We recommend immunisation against hepatitis A, tetanus and diphteria. Malaria is low risk except in the central highlands, and we recommend that you take Malarone from one day before visiting the central highland and sevens days after leaving.

Vietnam for 3 years and pregnancy

My husband and I are in the process of relocating to work in Vietnam for 3 years. I will be based in Ho Chi Minh City but we would obviously like to travel and see other parts of Vietnam while we are there.
Can you please advise me if any of the recommended vaccinations require us to wait until trying to conceive and what the recommended timeframes are?

You would need immunizations against hepatitis A and B, typhoid, japanese encephalitis and probably rabies. None of these vaccines contains live virus or bacteria and any risk to the fetus is purely theoretical. However, they have not been tested in pregnant women (for obvious reasons) so the general rule is that you avoid pregnancy until some weeks (two to four) after the last vaccination.

Malariaprophylaxis in Vietnam

I will make a trip in Vietnam, from Saigon to Hanoi, near the coast, for 17 days, with some parts in boat in the Mekong Delta. I will also go to a mountain retreat in the extreme north. Would you recommend profilaxis against malaria?

Not in the areas you will be passing through.
If you enter www.traveldoctor.info, click on Asia on the map, select Vietnam, chose travel length of less than one month and click for the results, you will at the bottom of the page find a map which shows you the areas in Vietnam, where we currently suggest malariaprophylaxis.
