Anthrax and bioterrorism
The terrorist attack on the US the 11th September 2001 and the bioterrorist attack with athrax spores in the follwing months, have focused attention on terrorism with biological weapons using bacteria and virus.
In the U.S., The Centers for Disease Control, CDC, U.S., have established a unit to provide information and answer questions fro the public on bioterrorism.
The has been many questions on Anthrax and Smallpox and especially on possible vacination against the two infections.
Anthrax
- Anthrax has been used for biological warfare since the second world war.
- The most dagerous form of Athrax in the lung infection, which is often lethal and can only be treated by very early treatment with penicillin, ciprofloxacin or tetracycline.
- The is a vaccine consisting of killed Anthrax bacteria. However, the vaccine is not registered for common use, and is not normally available.
- There are no good studies of the efficacy and potential side effects of the vaccine.
