Malaria has been reported from Dhaka, usually regarded as malaria free. Severeal hospitals report positive malaria blood films in patients who have not been outside Dhaka.

If the report is true, residents and visitors in Dhaka should be aware that a febrile illness may be malaria and prompt diagnosis and treatment is needed. The Asia Pacific Disease Outbreak surveillance report from June 28 reported outbreak of a "flu-like" illness in Dhaka and in the July 19 report reported that Dengue fever was spreading rapidly in Dhaka.
