New human cases of bird flu in Vietnam
14 August 2004

The cases in the northern Ha Tay province were a four-year-old boy, who died on 2 August, and an 11-month-old girl, who died on 4 August. The case in the southern Hau Giang province was a 25-year-old woman, who died on 6 August. Specimens from this patient have now tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

Comment
Further patients are being investigated from patients with severe pneumonia diagnosed over the past three weeks. The new cases underline the continued risk of transmission of the H5N1 to humans as long as the virus is found in domestic birds.
The patients all had close contact to poultry and there is no increased to to travellers and no reason to change any plans for visits to Vietnam.
