ProMED was started by Jack Woodall in 1994 as an early warning system based on news clipped from newspapers, rumours, TV and radio. Today ProMED report on all kind of outbreaks of infectious diseases not only in humans but also in animals and plants.
Comment
Early warning implies short reporting time and official channels are notoriously slow. Looking for recent data on malaria in Myanmar and China, the last data available through W.H.O. sources was from 2000.
ProMED may not always be right, and occasionally corrections are posted, but in most cases later events proved ProMED correct.
The biggest triumph is probably that the first message in English about what later became know as SARS was reported by ProMED 10 February 2003.
