Venezuela has intensified yellow fever immunization in the rural areas of Sucre and Alberto Adriani communities, Merida State, after the presence of the disease was confirmed in the above-mentioned areas. The Epidemiology Service confirmed that a fatal case was reported on 14 Aug 2004. This is the first confirmed case of yellow fever in Venezuela in 2004.
Comment
Vaccination against yellow fever is included in the standard recommendations for travels to Venezuela. This risk is low, but the infection has a reservoir in monkeys and continued vacci-nation of the local communities and visitors are therefore necessary to control the virus.
