Meningitis, Chad

At least 8 cases of bacterial meningitis due to meningococcal bacteria type W135 has been found in the three refugee camps Brejing, Treijing and Farchana in northern Chad. The camps receive refugees from the Dharfur region, Sudan.
The international community has allocated 178,000 doses of vaccines to the camps to control the outbreak.

Comment
Meningococcal bacteria type W135 is uncommon in Africa. It is important that aid workers to Chad and Sudan are immunized with the tetravalent meningococcal vaccine which include the W135.
