The Russian authorities has informed, that there is an ongoing outbreak of hepatitis A since September 6th in Nizhniy Novgorod Region including both the rural areas and Nizhniy Novgorod town. Sofar more than 350 cases has been registered, but the source of the outbreak has not been located. However, with the cases widespread over both the city and rural areas the dringking water is the primary suspected source. The authorities recommend that all water be boiled before use, and has established clinics for hepatitis A vaccinations in the city.

Immunization against hepatitis A is recommended for travels to all parts of Russia. The present outbreak illustrate that it is important to be protected against hepatitis A when travelling in Russia.
