Three cases of malaria have been reported from southrn Thailand within the last six months. Two had visited the Koh Phangan islands and the third had travelled all over Thailand including the Koh Phangan islands.

Thailand is not malaria-free but the risk is considered so low that the risk of serious side effects from malaria
chemoprophylaxis far outweigh the risk of malaria infection.

Thailand reported 37 335 malaria cases in 2004 with 325 fatalities and a _P. falciparum_ rate of 51 per cent
(). The report also state "In southern peninsula, there has been re-emergence of malaria transmission in many districts where it has been eradicated. Phuket
province reported indigenous cases where it has been eradicated earlier. One of the main reasons for this problem is illegal migrant labour force from Myanmar.
It is too early to reintroduce malaria prophylaxis to southern Thailand, but travellers to the area should be aware that fever during or after the visit could be malaria.
