New malaria case in Goa
4. March 2007

A patient with falciparum malaria was admitted to hospital in the United Kingdom 19. February after returning from Goa the 14. February. This is the 15th patient returning from India with malaria over the past 6 month.

Comment
The 15 imported cases of malaria are summarised in the table found in the ProMED link above.
This indicate that malaria prophylaxis is till needed for travellers to Goa.
There has been no information about the malaria situation in Goa from the Indian authorities, but with cases in visitors there must be a considerable number of cases in the indigenous population.
Until we know more about the situation from Indian sources, malaria prophylaxis should be useed by visitors to Goa.
