Chikungunya virus in Singapore
10 September 2008

One hundred and seventy eight patients have been diagnosed with Chikengunya virus infections since January 2008.Chikengunya is a new virus which has been spreading from East Africa through Asia since 2006. Of 178 cases, 94 were presumed infected in Malaysia, 4 in Indonesia, 2 in Sri Lanka, 2 in India and 1 in the Maldives.

Chikengunya infections are often mixed up with dengue fever and the course and clinical signs are quite similar. Chikengunya virus is transmitted by day biting mosquitoes of the Aedes family. There is no specific treatment.
