More than 100 mine workers in the South Goa district have been infected with chikungunya virus according to the Ministry of Health. The outbreak of chikungunya is spreading towards the town from the rural areas of Quepem and Sanguem, around 60 km from Panaji.

Chikungunya is a virus infection which is transmitted to humans by
Aedes mosquitoes infected with the virus. Infection can not be distinguished from dengue virus infection and malaria.
There is no vaccine against Chikungunya virus and complications are rare.
